There are hundreds of lending apps on Indian app stores now. Some are run by regulated lenders. Others are run by people who will scrape your contact list and then threaten your family with it. About five minutes of checking tells you which one you are dealing with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why registration matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The RBI does not register apps. It registers the NBFCs and banks that actually lend the money. So a legitimate lending app is either owned by an RBI-registered NBFC or bank, or it is a front end that partners with one. The app is the shopfront. The lender behind it is what you need to check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That difference has teeth. Unregistered operators are not bound by RBI rules on interest disclosure, recovery practices or data privacy. Borrow from an unregistered loan app<\/a> and you have almost no legal recourse when things go wrong. And things go wrong more often than borrowers expect. Reported cases include effective annual rates well above 100%, apps harvesting the borrower’s entire contact list, and recovery agents sending morphed photos to those contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: identify the NBFC or bank behind the app<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Any legitimate app names the NBFC or bank that funds and disburses the loan. Check the About section, the terms and conditions, or the loan agreement itself. If the name is nowhere in the app, stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is buried several taps deep in fine print. Annoying, but at least it exists. What should worry you is an app that only ever shows a tech-sounding brand name and never mentions a lending partner. A genuine quick loan app<\/a> names its regulated lending partner upfront, usually on the website and the app store listing too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2: search the RBI’s official list<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The RBI publishes its list of registered NBFCs on rbi.org.in, under the NBFC section. It is searchable and shows the company name, the registration number, and the city of the registered office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take the name from Step 1 and look it up. If it appears with a valid Certificate of Registration (CoR) number, the lender behind the app is registered. If it does not appear, do not use the app. The RBI also maintains a public directory of digital lending apps reported by regulated entities, so it is worth spending the extra minute there as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 3: match the registration number, not just the name<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Finding the name on a list is fine. Matching the details is better. The CoR number the app displays should line up with the RBI’s record, along with the company name and the registered address. Fake registration numbers, or numbers lifted from an entirely different company, are a known trick. A two-minute cross-check kills it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 4: check the app store listing carefully<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Google removed more than 2,200 personal loan apps from the India Play Store between September 2022 and August 2023, going by what it reported to the finance ministry. New ones keep arriving. Before you download anything, look at who the developer actually is. Then read the one-star reviews rather than the five-star ones. Hidden charges, aggressive collection calls, and demands for access to photos and contacts show up there first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check whether there is a working support number and a physical office address. Illegal operators avoid anything traceable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What the RBI’s digital lending guidelines require<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The September 2022 guidelines only bind RBI-regulated entities and the apps they work with. Under them, money moves directly from the lender’s bank account to yours, with no third-party pass-through account in between. Every fee has to be disclosed upfront in a Key Fact Statement before the agreement is executed. You also get a cooling-off period in which you can walk away by repaying the principal, with no penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An app that follows none of this is either unregistered or breaking the rules. Neither is a good position for you to be in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to do if you suspect an app is illegal<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Complaints against financial entities go to the RBI’s Sachet portal. You can also report the app to your local cyber crime cell, or file on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at cybercrime.gov.in. If it accessed your personal data without consent, that can be an offence under the Information Technology Act as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you have already borrowed and the calls have started, do not sit on it quietly. Police in several states have acted on these complaints, and the courts have not been sympathetic to the operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last check is yours<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Regulation has tightened and the app stores have got stricter, but enforcement will always be a step behind the fraud. New apps appear faster than the old ones get pulled, which leaves you as the final filter. Five minutes before you tap install is a cheap price for not spending the next six months on the phone to a recovery agent.<\/p>\n\n\n
