M.Tech or Master of Technology is a postgraduate degree in engineering and technology. This 2-year master’s degree is offered in various engineering branches or specializations, it provides the core theoretical and practical knowledge of engineering. M.Tech degree can be offered in various modes of education such as M.Tech Distance Education, M.Tech Online, M.Tech Part-Time, M.Tech Regular, M.Tech in Flexible Timing, or M.Tech for Working Professionals.
What is M.Tech Distance Education?
As mentioned above M.Tech is offered in distance education mode also. However, one must be aware that M.Tech and B.Tech are two technical degrees, hence every technical or non-technical degree needs some approvals or accreditations to be valid. B.Tech Distance Education and M.Tech Distance Education are not valid in India because these are not approved by the Supreme Court, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the University Grants Commission (UGC). Therefore, B.Tech Distance Education and M.Tech Distance Education cannot and should not be pursued and delivered from any institute.
How Distance Education Works?
In distance education students receive a lot of flexibility, it is a complete remote course. In this way students do not have to travel to campus every day to attend lectures or mark their attendance. Instead, they receive study material either online or in hardcopy, so that they can study at their own pace and at any time. M.Tech Distance Education courses are also cost-friendly because they only require tuition fees, and the cost of travel and accommodation is saved. But distance education has some demerits also such as a lack of networking opportunities, no doubt sessions with faculty, and no interaction with faculty and peers. But M.Tech Distance Education is a technical degree so it cannot be pursued so students can enroll in alternatives like M.Tech in flexible timing or M.Tech regular.

Conclusion
Is M.Tech Distance Education or B.Tech Distance Education valid in India? The easy answer to this question is ‘no’, B.Tech or M.Tech are not valid as distance education. Now why? Only because these two degrees are core technical, and any technical degree requires laboratory sessions that one can never learn via online mode or distance mode i.e. on their own. Therefore Supreme Court does not allow any institute to offer B.Tech and M.Tech in distance education.
If a student cannot pursue a regular degree because of any reason then they can definitely opt for B.Tech or M.Tech in flexible timing, because it has virtual theoretical classes in the evenings and physical laboratory sessions on weekends.
